Joker.One Scam Introduction

Joker.One was running a mining pool called JOKER POOL, investors staked EOS tokens into the JOKER mining pool and received JOKER tokens as a staking reward every 24 hours.

To redeem your staked EOS you had to return a majority of the JOKER token you were paid out in. Essentially this was a game of arbitrage, offloading the JOKER token for another token and then buying back the JOKER token at a lower price to pocket the difference.

The entire process was run by a smart contract, no human intervention. That's the sales pitch of DeFi (Decentralized Finance) meant to calm investors' fears that someone from the project can run off with their tokens, the whole operation is run by code with no human intervention. The Joker.One sales pitch emphasized the mining pool was risk free due to the smart contract that oversaw the entire operation from staking, rewards and redemptions. The only people that could access the EOS staked in the JOKER POOL (mine.joker) were the investors when they redeemed their staked tokens.

The Deception

In order to pull people into your scam you need to pass people's inherent lie detector, you have to somehow convince them enough that your a legitimate operation. How did the JOKER POOL appear to be legitimate in a space known for scams and con artists?

I don’t know what tests, signs or questions other people use to assess if something is a scam or not but below is the process I went through to assess if the JOKER POOL was legitimate or not.

How did the JOKER POOL make its money/tokens? That’s the first question I asked myself, what’s in it for Joker.One they’re not running a charity and there’s no such thing as magic money. Every enterprise needs to be self-sufficient otherwise it will shut down sooner or later. With this in mind I researched where the value was coming from, what made this mining pool sustainable (cover the costs with some profit for Joker.One to continue the operation)?

To summarize what was in it for Joker.One, they collected a 5% fee when you staked your EOS token to the JOKER POOL and they then re-staked all the EOS in the JOKER POOL to the EOS REX pool to earn REX tokens. The profits gained (REX tokens) from the EOS REX pool would be used for the continued development of the Joker.One ecosystem. On top of that, participants in the JOKER POOL had to return most of the JOKER tokens that were paid out to them as a reward. All in all this satisfied my sustainability question.

The next question I had was can I get my EOS tokens out of the JOKER POOL? I tested this out by staking some EOS and a few days later I redeemed all my EOS tokens by returning most of the JOKER tokens I had earned from the JOKER mining pool. All my staked EOS tokens were returned to my EOS wallet. With most financial scams you realise you're caught in a scam when you can’t get your money out via a redemption. This test was a partial pass, I would retest this several weeks later where my stake in the JOKER POOL was much higher.

With these two scam tests passed I proceeded to participate in the JOKER POOL mining operation with a healthy dose of suspicion. I gradually increased my stake in the mining pool on a fortnightly basis adding $500USD each fortnight. After about six weeks I had one final test. Can I redeem all my staked EOS tokens which had accumulated to approximately $2000USD at that stage. After redeeming all my EOS tokens I was satisfied that I could stake a greater amount of EOS tokens into the JOKER POOL and pull out at any time. I was wrong.

The Theft

In late July 2021 the JOKER POOL smart contract stopped running, participants couldn't redeem their staked EOS tokens, the EOS tokens were trapped in the joker.mine wallet where all the staked EOS was stored. With the DeFi smart contract that managed the whole operation stopped there was no way for participants to get their EOS tokens back. The EOS tokens were in the mine.joker wallet (https://bloks.io/account/mine.joker) that can only be accessed by the operators of Joker.One.

Telegram group

There was a Joker.One Official Telegram chat group called @jokerdotoneofficial. When the JOKER POOL smart contract was suspended instructions were sent from the operators of Joker.One to fill out a Google form for the processing of redemptions.

Shortly after this message was posted in the Telegram group members began posting messages in reply that they had filled out the redemption form and awaited the return of their EOS tokens. Some redemptions were processed but these were mostly whales who got their EOS tokens back. Crypto was supposed to be different but even in crypto the fat cats are always saved first.

On August 11, 2021 02:58:37 AM all redemptions stopped. The EOS block chain analyser shows that the mine.joker wallet (https://bloks.io/account/mine.joker) has 101,837.1152 EOS tokens that are still yet to be returned to their rightful owners.

The Joker.One Telegram group became increasingly anxious as the weeks went by with no further redemptions being processed. The operators posted messages over this period asking for patience and for members of the group not to be negative or offensive otherwise they would be banned from the Telegram group. They even had the nerve to advise members of the group to try Joker.One’s other DeFi offerings suggesting they could make good returns there.

The Joker held all the cards, upset the Joker and you risked being kicked out of the Telegram group and losing the last communications channel to the crypto terrorist Joker holding your EOS tokens hostage.

On September 11 the @jokerdotoneofficial Telegram group was deleted. There is no means by which to contact the scammers behind Joker.One. The Google form emailed the completed JOKER POOL redemption form to contact@joker.one, I’ve emailed this address in vain a number of times with no reply.

Kill the Joker

The only course of action left is to shed light on what happened and warn people to stay away from Joker.One and now Joker Farm their new defi play. Avoid all of Joker.One’s tokens JOKER, JKDAO and LUCKY and if you're a crypto exchange or wallet provider don’t support these tokens.

I’ve emailed the EOS token wallet providers Wombat and TokenPocket informing them of these events asking them not to display the Joker.One Dapp in their DeFi explorer or list any of their tokens (JOKER, JKDAO and LUCKY) for trading. The response from these wallet providers was disappointing, there was no response from TokenPocket and Wombat responded with “Thank you for notifying us about this! We will definitely take this into consideration”. Unfortunately Wombat still lists Joker.One and their new Joker Farm Dapp in their DeFi explorer. Wombat’s user base can potentially fall victim to these thieves, something Wombat should be shielding their users from by not listing the Dapps or supporting the tokens. On a brighter note Joker.One or Joker Farm does not appear on the TokenPocket DeFi Dapp listings anymore, maybe they acted on my email and just forgot to reply.

Joker’s Change of Clothes

Since these events the Joker.One site https://joker.one has been rebranded to Joker Farm, this rebrand indicates they’ve moved on to a new scam to lure in the next crop of victims. It’s my intention to shine a light on these thieves wherever they go. The great thing about the block chain is that you can follow the token trail as the Joker empties his wallets.

There are 101838.1996 EOS tokens in the wallet where the skated tokens for the JOKER POOL were stored by the DeFi smart contract, the value of the EOS tokens in the mine.joker wallet is approximately $500,000 USD.

DeFi warning

This is a warning to everyone who has tokens staked in a mining pool or considering staking tokens in a mining pool, the crypto industry sells smart contracts as being tamper proof. The code runs the DeFi contract and there’s no human intervention. The only problem with that assurance is firstly the code is written by people and people control the DeFi smart contracts operation. If they stop running the smart contract then you can’t redeem your tokens. It’s the equivalent of a bank or stock market ceasing its operations, you can’t access your money or stocks.

Bad actors like Joker.One are not only a threat to individuals, they are a threat to the crypto industry as a whole where their criminal behaviour adds to the case of regulating the crypto industry. Ideally Joker.One’s Dapps should be removed from the EOS blockchain. Block.one can these bad actors be exiled?
